What’s the Purpose of Bible Study?

Today, let’s explore the SOAP Bible Study Method: Scripture Observation Application Prayer Bible Study Method

Step-by-Step: The SOAP Method

1. Scripture

  • Choose a passage and read it slowly— at least twice, or even three times. It’s good to read it aloud at least one of the times.
  • Write down one verse that catches your attention. It might stir your heart, challenge your thinking, or provide some clarity. Don’t worry about picking the “perfect” one. God will meet you right where you are.

Tip:  Planning ahead with a topic or chapter or devotional book to study can help you feel more confident and focused. Even 5–7 days at a time is a great start!

2. Observation

  • Ask questions: What stands out? What does this verse say about God? What does the verse say about you or about how you should live? Is there a repeated word or phrase? What’s happening in the surrounding verses?
  • Write down notes on what feels significant or interesting. Let curiosity and reverence work hand in hand and side-by-side.

3. Application

  • This step is all about making the passage personal. Ask yourself things like:
    • How does this verse speak to my life today?
    • Is there an attitude I need to change?
    • Is there an action I should take?
    • What truth do I need to embrace?
    • Is there encouragement in God’s words that I can share with someone else?

Ask for Lord for guidance in understanding, grace, or even a conviction. All are expressions of God drawing you closer.

4. Prayer

  • Now talk with the Lord about what you discovered.
    • Is there something to confess?  celebrate?  surrender?
    • Ask Him to help you walk in the truth you just uncovered.
    • Or, simply pray the verse back to Him, making it your own.
