How to Use a Praying Scriptures Journal
In our Praying Scripture series we are realizing that Praying the Scriptures can become a lifeline for our hearts. Here are a few ideas for keeping your own Praying Scriptures Journal.

Why Should I Keep a Praying Scriptures Journal?
Keeping a Praying Scriptures Journal is an encouraging and helpful practice. It becomes a valued resource. It will be a place you can return to whenever you need encouragement, clarity, or a reminder of how God has met you in a particular emotion or situation.
Over time, your journal grows with you. It becomes a collection of verses that spoke to your heart in different seasons. It will be a collection of the Scriptures you have prayed.
It will also be a place you can go to when you need to pray about that issue again. A starting point that directs you to God’s Word as your first response in any situation.
It also becomes a precious record of your walk with the Lord. It will remind you of how He has guided, strengthened, met with you and transformed you along the way.
How to Use a Praying Scriptures Journal
A Praying Scriptures Journal is designed to help you slow down, sit with God’s Word, and let Scripture shape your prayers. Each entry gives you space to reflect, respond, and rest in His presence.
1. Write out the Bible verse.
Copying the verse helps you linger with it. As you write, notice any words or phrases that stand out or speak to your heart.
2. Answer the Reflection Question.
Use this space to be honest with yourself and with the Lord. If you don’t already have a reflection question that you want to use, here are some to consider:
- What is this verse showing you?
- What emotion, situation, or need does it touch?
- How does this Scripture speak to your situation?
- What truth is God whispering in your heart?
3. Pray the Scripture back to God.
Write a simple, heartfelt prayer using the verse as your guide. Bring your hurt, your hope, and your situation to Him. Let God’s Word shape your response.
As you move through these steps, you’re not just filling pages — you’re building a personal record of God’s comfort, guidance, and faithfulness in your life.
4. Review
Reflect on God’s faithfulness.
Return to your journal a few days later and read your entry with fresh eyes. Take some time to reflect on God’s faithfulness. How has God moved in your situation? How did God move in your heart? How has He answered your prayer?
These reflections become reminders that He is present, active, and gently shaping your story.
The Value of Keeping a Praying Scriptures Journal
As you move through these practices—writing the Word, reflecting honestly, praying it back to God, and returning later to see what He has done—this journal becomes more than a place to write. It becomes a quiet companion on your spiritual journey.
It will be a record of God’s nearness in every season. Let the pages of your Praying Scriptures Journal remind you that He meets you in the moment and wants to transform your heart with His steady, faithful love.
