Creating a Quiet Time Routine

You can create a Quiet Time routine that works for your life.

Have you ever wondered, “How often should I be spending Quiet Time with God?”. If so, you are not alone. It’s a question many of us ask as we seek to grow n our faith.

It is desirable to spend an intentional time with the Lord each day.

Think about any close relationship in your life: your spouse, your children, a dear friend. That bond only deepens through regular time together, right? The same is true for our relationship with the Lord. When we intentionally spend time with Him—daily—it brings life and richness to our walk with Him.

How Long Should Quiet Time Be?

Here’s the truth: there’s no set amount of time. And that’s a beautiful grace.

Just like we won’t all have our quiet time at the same place or hour, we also won’t all spend the same amount of time. The Bible doesn’t prescribe a specific number of minutes. We see Jesus praying through the night… and others lifting up one-sentence prayers.

If you’re just beginning, a Quiet Time can be as short and simple as 5–10 minutes. The important part is showing up, not checking off box or setting a timer for a certain number of minutes.

As your relationship with the Lord grows, and as you begin to explore different Bible Study methods and as you spend time in prayer, that time may naturally extend.

For many, Quiet Time might start with reading a short passage of Scripture and saying a heartfelt prayer. That’s a beautiful beginning.

Spiritual Activities to Explore

In addition to Bible reading and Prayer, here are other soul-nourishing ways to spend your Quiet Time:

  • Scripture Journaling: Write out a verse and your reflections. You can even turn the Scripture into a prayer.  You may wish to try this Read, Write, Meditate and Prayer method.
  • Bible Study: You could join a Bible Study at your church or another local or online study.  There is usually some studying that you could do during your Quiet Time. You could do a Bible Study on your own.  Perhaps starting with this Chapter Summary Bible Study method. It’s a great way to start. All of these will help you dive deeper into the Word
  • Verse Mapping: Trace key words, meanings, and insights from a passage. Bible Verse Mapping is one of my favorite Bible Study methods.  It is great done alone or with a group.
  • Praise & Worship: Listen to worship music—and really listen. Let the words sink into your spirit.  You might even create your own play list for special songs that lift your spirit.
  • Guided Journaling: Use a devotional or journal with prompts to help engage your heart and mind.

The Key? Be Consistent in your Quiet Time Routine

Whether it’s morning or evening… ten minutes or an hour… at the kitchen table or in a cozy nook—the most important thing is consistency.

To keep your Quiet Time steady:

  • Choose a time that works for you.
  • Pick a location that feels peaceful.
  • Start with one or two spiritual activities—Scripture reading and prayer are perfect to begin.
  • Stick with it daily.
  • Let your time grow naturally. Add new activities as you feel led and as your schedule allows.

And guess what? You can have more than one Quiet Time a day. Maybe Scripture Reading and prayer are perfect for you in the morning.  You could perhaps also have a few minutes of gratitude journaling before you go to bed at night. A simple prompt like, “Where did I see God’s goodness today?” can guide your heart into restful reflection.

No matter the season you’re in or the time you have to give—God is waiting, delighted by your desire to be with Him.

Consistency isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.
