Bible Verse Mapping Made Easy
Have you ever heard the term Bible Verse Mapping and wondered, “What on earth is that—and how do I do it?” If so, you’re in good company. Today, I’m walking you through the basics of this beautiful study method that helps us dig deeper into Scripture in a way that feels both meaningful and doable.
A Little Backstory
Truthfully, I’m not sure who originally coined the term Verse Mapping, but I’ve personally been using this method for close to fifteen years now—and I keep coming back to it because it’s just that powerful. There’s something so rich about slowing down, looking at Scripture verse by verse, and letting God speak into the details.
Why Try Bible Verse Mapping?
As believers, we carry this incredible truth—the Holy Spirit dwells within us, guiding us, comforting us, and helping us grow. One of the sweetest ways to grow closer to God is by spending time in His Word through Bible study. Verse Mapping helps us do just that. It’s less about checking off a quiet time box and more about cultivating real relationship.
Isn’t it amazing that the Creator of the universe longs to know us intimately? He desires to walk beside us in our everyday moments—when we’re doing the laundry, driving to work or enjoying coffee with a friend.
As we spend time in His Word, we begin to imprint His truth on our hearts, carrying it with us wherever we go.

Getting Started with Bible Verse Mapping
There’s no strict formula—but here’s a gentle guide to help you begin:
Step 1: Choose a verse to study. Is there a verse that you’ve read recently that spoke to your hear? Or one your Pastor referenced in a recent service? That’s a good place to start. Be sure to read a few verses before and after to understand the full context.
Step 2: Write out the verse. Seeing the words in your own handwriting can make them feel even more personal.
Step 3: Compare translations. This is optional, but some people find this helpful.
Step 4: Highlight key words. Circle or underline the words that stand out to you the most.
Step 5: Dig into definitions. Look up the original Greek or Hebrew meaning. You can use a Bible concordance—available online and in print. Write out the definitions.
Step 6: Add cross-references. Note other verses that relate to this verse. It’s beautiful to see how Scripture threads together! Write out one or two of these.
Step 7: Ask and answer (write them out) questions. Who’s speaking? What’s happening? Why does this matter? Write out your discoveries and reflections.
Step 8: Reflect on God’s character. Write down what this verse reveals about who God is? I like calling this the “God is…” section.
Step 9: Apply it to your life. How does this truth impact your heart today? How might God use it to lead or encourage you? Write it down.
Step 10: Wrap up with prayer. Pray through the verse—or write a prayer asking God to help you live out what you’ve learned.
